of all repertory known to the author which specifically requires the
archlute or any type of theorbo. The listings are subdivided by instrument,
and also by country. Source details and brief biographical details of
the composers are also included. The book includes an introductory essay
discussing the types of repertory and the geographical and chronological
limits of each instrument.

A history of the
archlute and liuto attiorbato, chitarrone and the various types of theorbo.
Essentially a modified form of the author's doctoral thesis, this book
is based primarily on the evidence of surviving instruments, but also
draws upon historical writings, musical sources and iconography, to
present as full a picture as possible of these instruments' histories.
